Aruba Open Beach Tennis Championships 2022

The sport is a hybrid of racket sports and beach sports, and is played in singles and doubles categories. Originally evolving on the beaches of Italy in the early 1970s when a group of vacationing tennis players grabbed their rackets and played on a beach volleyball court, the sport is now played around the globe, attracting hundreds of thousands of players, with the pro circuit making the tournament rounds—from Italy to Brazil, Russia to Japan.

Here on Aruba, several beach tennis clubs and beach tennis courts and complexes keep this sport on the forefront of island activities, with hundreds of locals of all ages and levels of athletic ability participating on the regular year-round.

The One happy island spirit and the easy camaraderie of the sport—plus the pumping music, cold beers, and sunny beach setting—guarantees the great success of this sport on Aruba.  In fact, although Italian and Brazilian players dominate the sport during most international beach tennis events, Aruba’s knack for always throwing a great party with impeccable hospitality and flawless organization has earned the annual Aruba Open Beach Tennis Championships the reputation as the must-attend event of the year in the sport, garnering the title of “Best Ambiance” and attracting more participants than any other beach tennis tournament in the world for the past decade.

This year’s Aruba Open Beach Tennis Championships takes place November 13 through November 20, and is expected to attract some 1400 pro and amateur players from 40+ countries, with a $60,000 prize pool. Anticipation and excitement is high, as the tournament was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the global pandemic.

In addition to competitors, the beach festival ambiance attracts several thousand spectators daily, there to watch the athletic prowess of the top players in the world, as well as cheer on Aruba’s local players while soaking up the festival vibe--there is just as much fun happening off the courts as on the courts! Various local restaurants have pop-ups offering gourmet noshes, beach bites, and healthy salads and smoothies, while multiple bars serve up ice-cold beers, fresh mojitos, and more.  There’s live entertainment with bands and deejays keeping the party going well into the evening.
