Driving around Aruba: what is there to expect? It’s not dangerous to drive on the island, but there are some things you should know about before you take off in your rental car.
The driving side in Aruba is on the right-hand side. If you want to overtake someone, you do so on the left-hand side. The general traffic rules are as follows: the speed limit in urban areas is 30km/h, out of town 60km/h and on faster roads 80km/h. Road signs dictate the speed in km/h. On roundabouts, the cars on the roundabout have right of way. When approaching a crossroad without traffic signs, traffic from the right has right of way. Also, when you turn left, the upcoming and opposing vehicles have right of way.
Gas stations might be a little different than what you’re used to at home. At most gas stations, you’re not allowed to pump gas yourself. Attendants will do it for you. If you encounter a gas station with self service, you’re supposed to pay first, then pump gas. Gas prices in Aruba are the same at every gas station, since the gas prices are regulated by the government.
There are only a few things you should know about parking in Aruba. In Oranjestad, they introduced parking meters, so always check if you have to pay for parking. Parking alongside a yellow line and on a bridge is prohibited, as is parking on a road with a continuous middle line. Other than that, you should be fine! Aren’t you too sure about driving? Booking a taxi or guided tour is a safe alternative to explore the island.
