Music in Aruba and the Caribbean

Get ready to move to the rhythm of the Caribbean and Aruba! The music scene on the One Happy Island is as diverse as its people, drawing from a rich and varied cultural heritage. From traditional styles like waltz, danza, mazurka, and tumba to more contemporary genres like salsa, reggae, and hip hop; there is something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re a music aficionado or simply looking to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of this stunning island, let’s learn all about the different Caribbean music genres.

Caribbean music genres

The Caribbean music scene boasts a wide range of genres and styles. From reggae and dancehall in Jamaica to salsa and merengue in the Dominican Republic, there’s something for every music lover. Each Caribbean island also has its unique sound. Think of the soca and calypso of Trinidad and Tobago, or of the zouk and kompa of the French Antilles. Add some harmony to your vacation and immerse yourself in Caribbean island music.

Aruban traditional music

Aruba's music scene is a diverse reflection of the island's rich cultural heritage. Over the years, African, European and Caribbean influences have made the music scene as vibrant as it is today.

Aruba's traditional musical genres include the waltz, mazurka and tumba, which are often played during festivals and holidays. Think of Dia di Betico, Flag & Anthem Day, Dera Gai and the weekly Bon Bini Festival.

The use of percussion instruments such as the wiri, a local percussion instrument, and drums is common in traditional Aruban music. In addition, folk instruments such as the cuarta, a small guitar-like instrument, and the bandoline, a type of mandolin, are often used. Listening to traditional Aruban music can be a fascinating experience, as it’s not only a reflection of the island's past, but also an expression of its history.

Aruban music

Today, music is the soundtrack of Aruban people’s lives. It’s an integral part of their celebrations, and it echoes in clubs, cafés and live concerts.

Modern Aruban music is a fusion of traditional Aruban rhythms with modern influences from various genres, such as Latin, reggae, and pop. The island's music scene has been gaining recognition in recent years, with a new generation of artists bringing fresh energy and creativity to the mix. Many of these artists perform in local bars and clubs, and their music can also be heard at the island's many festivals and events throughout the year. In Aruba, you can always listen to (live) music perfect for a day of fun in the sun.

Aruba music festivals

One thing’s for sure: whether it’s international hits or authentic Aruba music, the island’s community has a deep appreciation for music and the way it makes them feel. Going to one of the Aruba musical festivals is therefore one of the best things to do on the island.
